Dish TV-Superstation Pack. May Lose UPN/Other Areas
May 29, 2001Posted by Mandy
Thanks to Hibbertlange for this :)

On the thread started to discuss how to get UPN in your area, alot of people
with DISH TV were recommending it as a solution. Well, Carolina Blue
saw this on the Bronze:

YOUR DISH NETWORK SOURCE OF SUPERSTATIONS MAY SOON BE DRYING UP!

Recently imposed legislation from the FCC may lead Dish Network to choose
pull its currently offered Superstations--the only existing source of UPN and
WB in rural, cable-free markets--from their national offerings, effectively
cutting off hundreds of thousands of viewers.

It's not a done deal yet, but will likely soon be so as Charlie Ergen, CEO of
Dish, has made statements to this effect. In short--regarding the
Superstations--he was recently heard to say: "I'm not optimistic about their
fate" (during a customer call-in segment on a Charlie Chat program).

If anyone who currently subscribes to Dish's Superstations and doesn't live
within the NYC or Boston areas--where UPN and WB will remain available in
Locals Packages--wishes to preserve their UPN, it's important you let Dish
Network know--via e-mail or a courteous phone call--how important that
programming is to you. Currently, Dish customer reps have been told not to
discuss this situation and to disavow any knowledge of it. In such a case,
cite the fact that the Superstations have ceased to be advertised, that
they've been pulled from annual pricing packages, and that the CEO has
confirmed they're in jeopardy to make your point.

While the demise of the Superstations may well be inevitable, it can't hurt
to let the folks at Dish Network know just how prized this programming is to
you.

Dish Network can be reached at 800-333-DISH (3474) or contacted via e-mail
through their website: www.dishnetwork.com.

Again, all personnel will disavow any knowledge of this, but it's critical
they know how you feel about this issue, regardless. It may even be effective
to request to speak with a supervisor if the rep insists the Superstations
are not in jeopardy. Then, at least, some measure of customer interest will
filter through and be made known to the "suits" at Echostar (Dish Network)."

It sounded like the Dish people wouldn't know about it until UPN just
disappeared off their TV.

For DirecTV, this was submitted by WatcherX:

Go to DireTV's website http://DirecTV.com and click on the feedback icon and
tell them you want UPNH. I received a mailer from the DirecTV service
provider asking for feedback about what we as customers wanted. They gave an
800 # to get feedback about adding the Outdoor Network, I told them I wanted
the UPN Network...I could care less about the Outdoor Network. The # to call
if a DirecTV customer is: 800-236-2190. You will be asked your name, address,
and Phone # to confirm you are indeed a DirecTV customer.

Here are the areas fighting to get UPN:

Are still gathering on the main thread

Here is an article of a New York town that has successfully petitioned their
local Time Warner Cable Company for UPN.

Austin and Knoxville are gaining serious ground. St. Louis is home to the
biggest WB affiliate that is a shared WB/UPN station and rumor has it the CEO
of the station is ....um...Jamie Kellner! (oops!) ...That would be a problem!

Thanks to the moderators for allowing the separate threads to remain open.
With any luck they could be closed soon!
