SITTING ON THE BUBBLE

By DON KAPLAN

May 7, 2001 -- MAY is the month when nature springs back to life and shaky TV shows await their fate.
In the next few weeks the broadcast networks will announce their new fall schedules. But beforethen, they'll pack up the latest crop of under-performers and send them to TV's version of the lost luggage office.

The annual housecleaning is necessary because, "if you're a network, you want to keep advertisers and viewers happy," says TV industry analyst Marc Berman.

Obviously, hits like "Survivor" or "ER" will be back next fall, but there's an in-between ground - that gray, fuzzy territory between ratings dog and primetime champion - that's not so clear.
