Will he outrun his legacy?

Colin Hanks was raised by his mother, actress Samantha Lewes, in Sacramento - a safe distance from the bright lights of Hollywood - and a vantage from which he watched his doting father, Tom Hanks, become America's most beloved actor. It wasn't until Colin went south to Los Angeles (where he attended Loyola Marymount University), that he made the decision to join the family business. There he met current girlfriend Busy Philipps (of the sadly short-lived Freaks and Geeks), whom he says motivated him to make the leap: "She changed my life. She met me at a point when I wasn't really content, but not doing anything to change where I was. She pushed me to try acting as a profession." That decision was the easy part; whether or not Hanks the younger, now 23, can forge an identity separate from his father's remains the career issue for the would-be heir.

"I'm not trying to achieve what he's achieved, by any means," Colin explains. "When it come down to it, I just want to work." This month, after a number of small roles - a recurring gig on the WB sci-fi series Roswell, a bit part in last year's Cyrano de Bergerac - inspired teen comedy Whatever It Takes, and a walk-on in That Thing You Do! (1996), his father's directorial debut - Colin's big adventure begins in earnest as he gets his first taste of significant screen time, playing best friend to Ben Foster's loverlorn hero and brother to Kirsten Dunst in Get Over It. Wait and see if this Hanks makes it Big on his own.
